This is a view north over the valleys
behind the Côte d’Azur,
of which the Vesubie is one.
|

The lovely village of Belvedere
hosts some good fêtes and this was folk dance group from Nice
Belvedere is close to us by
both road and footpath. The footpath
is beautiful
|

The view from the road down
from Belvedere is tremendous, here looking north towards Cottage St Joseph.
From the village square you get views both north
and south along the valley
|
|

This is the Col de Colmiane. You can ski here, on piste, in winter.
The walking is tremendous and the paths very
well way marked with signposts at crucial points. The signpost gives height, name of
location, a reference number that cross-refers to the map, and the direction
to walk to other named places.
|

The
pretty village of Lantosque, in the Vesubie Valley
about 15 minutes drive south from Cottage St Joseph. There is a Via Ferrata that starts by the
church and follows the gorge.
|

One of the most stunning valleys is the Madonna
de Fenestra, which is about 20km by road.
You can drive up to 1900m and then walk (or sit and admire) in an
amazing bowl of mountains
|
|

This is on the way to the Lac
Trecolpas, which is above Boréon, which is a lovely spot with a lake,
wonderful views and good restaurants.
There is cross-country skiing there in the winter.
|

The village of St Martin
Vesubie is a few km. North of us and has a
beautiful centre and quaint streets.
There are good small shops here, and it has a number of fêtes and
other happenings during the year
|

Here are the gentlemen of St
Martin Vesubie cooking polenta in the village square for one of the
fêtes. Polenta is one of the local
dishes made of maize flour.
|
|

Nice, the capital of the Côte d’Azur,
about 1 hour’s drive, or take the bus from Roquebillière. Here looking across the Bay towards the
sunset.
|

There are beautiful markets in
Nice (Cours Saleya, La Buffa, Place de la Liberation) and in Menton, which is
a beautiful train ride along the coast from Nice, or about 1½ hours by car
from the gite.
This is the covered market in
Menton.
|

Roquebilliere has the only mill in the
Alpes-Maritimes which mills polenta for private individuals. It also mills wheat and barley, but very little
is grown in the area. The mill is
open to visitors when it is operating.

|

Isola 2000 is the local,
internationally known, ski resort that is about 1¼ hour’s drive from Cottage
St Joseph. This was just before
Christmas 2004
|

There are excellent places to snow shoe – here at
Authion, about ¾ hour from the Gite, there is a beautiful circuit where any
walker can experience the joys of walking on the snow. It is easy to get to and when we last
did it there was virtually no one there.
|

The sun in early January is warm enough to take a
picnic stop out in the open at over 2000m, here when Nick was out on snow
shoes. It was possible to see Corsica from this walk
